Paul Stothard obtained his PhD in Molecular Biology and Genetics from the University of Alberta in 2002. He then worked as a postdoctoral student in Bioinformatics on a variety of projects involving the analysis and interpretation of large data sets. As an Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science, he is using bioinformatics and genomics to better understand the relationships between DNA and livestock traits. The main goals of his research include: 1. identifying DNA sequence differences responsible for variation in key livestock traits; 2. developing a new class of RNA-based biomarkers for predicting livestock traits; and 3. characterizing differences in the bacterial populations that reside in high and low efficiency animals.
